Whelp...we did it! After much hemming and hawing, we registered Jase in pre-k. AHHH...I can't belive my little baby is old enough to even be talking about this!!!!
His birthday falls at a really bad time of year for starting school. In our county, you must be 4 before the first day of school to register for the public pre-k program. He is about 2 weeks shy. So he was already going to be starting school at a very old age (because 2 weeks shy of 5 is oh, so old, right?). The dilemma was...not everyone makes it into the public pre-k program. They take income and developmental level into account. Children who "need" to be in the program are granted the first spots, and then it is on a first come, first serve basis. If Jase didn't get in, he wouldn't be starting school until 2 weeks shy of his 6th birthday and he would be jumping right into the all-day kindergarten class. This didn't sit right with me, so we started looking into other options. I found this really great pre-school program at The United Methodist Church in La Plata called Blessed Lambs. They offer a 2-day-a-week 3-year-old program and a 3-day-a-week 4-year-old program. He will begin the 3-year-old program in September! Then, we can reserve a spot for him in the 4-year old program, so if he doesn't make it into the public school he will have still have a spot at this school.
Right now he isn't too excited about it. Whenever we mention school he pouts and says, "I don't love school." When we return all the paper work they said we can bring him to look around and I have a feeling he will have a whole new attitude after he sees how much fun it is going to be!
